CARING FOR YOUR TOOTHBRUSH

One of your best weapons against tooth decay and other dental problems is your toothbrush. Your toothbrush is a vital part of your oral health.

Because your toothbrush helps in protecting your teeth against plaque buildup and other potentially harmful microorganisms that can negatively impact your oral hygiene. It is very important to properly care for and maintain your toothbrush.

Wash your hand with soap and water for at least 20 seconds just to be sure it is clean before you touch your toothbrush or floss. Your hands can transmit bacteria and viruses so make sure to wash them.

The most basic method to disinfect your toothbrush is to run its bristles under warm or hot water. You can do this before or after use.

Replacing your toothbrush can't be overemphasized. Ensure to change your toothbrush after you suffer from a cold or illness to prevent reinfection or spreading it to the rest of the family. A frayed toothbrush damages the gum, so it is advisable to get a new one.

It is important to note that keeping your toothbrush free of germs is vital for minimizing infections and the health risks that can arise from using a contaminated brush.

Have you ever seen someone grinding their teeth against each other without eating? Either while the person is sleeping or not? Did you notice the sound the action made, it made you feel so uncomfortable, right?

This act is known as BRUXISM. If you have bruxism, you may unconsciously clench your teeth when you're awake or clench or grind them during sleep.

This condition can lead to damage of the teeth and the mouth as a whole.

As you have learnt earlier here, your mouth is home to hundreds of different types of bacteria, which is why you need to brush your teeth regularly. It isn't a thing of disgust to learn that every time you brush, your toothbrush is introduced to the bacteria in your mouth.

Logically, a toothbrush cover seems to help keep a toothbrush away from outside germs, but before we go too far, we must address what a cover does for the germs on the toothbrush.

A toothbrush cover may seem like a good option for keeping your toothbrush clean, but the American Dental Association (ADA) notes that closed containers create a moist environment that promotes the growth of bacteria and recommends that you store toothbrushes in an upright position so they can air-dry, and so they don't touch each other.

Smiling is universally considered to be a way we display joy. It communicates our internal world to people on the outside, and it can be a welcoming sign to new people.

It is important to note that when brushing, in between the teeth, the gums and the tongue should be put into consideration and not just the outer surface of the teeth.

Doing this helps to remove the whitish sticky film, plaque, that builds upon the surface of the teeth and gums, food substances and bacteria that sticks to the corners of the teeth and the tongue. If these substances are not removed, it builds up and can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and mouth odour.

Endeavor to brush your teeth at least twice a day and toothbrushes should be replaced every 3 months, or when the bristles get worn or frayed.

It might feel so difficult to change your method of brushing to this. Remember, it takes time and consistency to build a habit.

Halitosis is an oral health problem where the main symptom is bad-smelling breath. In most cases, finding the cause of the bad breath is the first step toward treating this preventable condition.

The causes of bad breath are numerous just as there are many sources of bacteria in the mouth.

The things we eat are linked to our breath. Food items like garlic, onions, affect our breath until they leave the body. Some drinks like coffee, alcohol, trigger the cause of bad breath.

Bacteria in the mouth tend to breed on the food that remains in the mouth, thereby causing an unpleasant taste and odour in the mouth. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental visit helps to prevent this.

Dry mouth is caused when there is a major decrease in saliva flow, the mouth can't cleanse itself and remove food particles.
