My child fell and his permanent incisor popped out! What do I do?
This is unfortunately a very common occurrence with children who engage in rough plays. It also occurs in adults, although in such cases, the common causes are Road traffic accidents.
There are however predisposing factors which include proclined incisors and other forms of malocclusion(poorly aligned teeth).
When such an incident occurs, the following steps should be taken immediately
1. Time is of the essence! Immediately pick up the fallen tooth by the crown. If the tooth is seen to be dirty, make a solution of milk and water in a nylon pouch and place the tooth inside the pouch for a period of 30seconds.
2. Still holding the tooth by the crown, ascertain the front and back portions of the tooth.
3. Insert and re-implant the tooth right side up into the socket and bite down hard on a handkerchief or guaze.
4. Visit the nearest dental clinic for splinting and subsequent root canal treatment.
5. If the child or the parent is not able to reimplant the tooth, the child should be encouraged to place the fallen tooth in the space under the tongue and should be monitored to ensure the tooth isn’t swallowed. If the child is unable to place the tooth under the tongue, place it in the milk containing pouch and visit the nearest dental clinic for reimplantation and splinting.
The prognosis of survival of the tooth decreases with every second of the tooth being out of the mouth, therefore, every effort should be made to ensure re-implantation is done.
