Interesting to note......
-In 1872,American Medical Association resolved that "The honor of discovery of practical
Anesthesia is due to the late Dr.Horace Wells of Connecticut. "
-Dr. Horace Wells was a dentist. He used N2O.
-Another dentist,Dr.Morton,publicly Demo GA at Harvard.He used ether.
-The ether monument in Boston was erected to honor Dr. Morgan.
-Malaya had its first GA operation, using ether in Malacca hospital on 26/3/1847.
-GA discovered by dentists is now by Physicians. L.A discovered by medical doctors is now mainly used by dentists.

- Dentist designed the nasopharyngeal tube still in use today.
-In 1915,a dentist was elected President of International Anesthetic Research Society. Also President of American Society of Anesthesiology.
-It is,however, the medical doctors who made Anesthesiology, a specialty.

-Dentistry and medicine is more Art than science.
-Dentists contributed a lot in Anesthesiology.
-Dentists color-coded gas tanks to prevent mix-ups.
-Dentist's also invented pin-index to avoid wrong connection.
- These safety features remain the standard to this day.

-There are 2 types of consciousness. Normal waking consciousness and altered state of consciousness.
- Normal waking consciousness is awake and aware of our surroundings.
-Anything else is "Altered state of consciousness.
-Use of GA by dental doctor and medical doctor differs.
Most dental work can be done in conscious patients with L.A.
-Fear and anxiety, however, can make dental work impossible.
- GA is Dentist's last resort.
Medical operations can only be done on unconscious patients.
- Need an Anesthetist, whenever GA is used.

- No hallucination if N2O is titrated to remove dental anxiety and fear.
-How about over-dose?
Can be reversed just by taking off the nasal hood and let patient breathe room air.
-How long can patient be kept under N2O?
Best not > 1 hour in private practice.
-Any difference in dosage between child and adult?
No difference!
-G.P should not use I.V. sedation.
- Premixed 50:50 N2O and Oxygen not acceptable in Dental practice, b'cos can't be titrated.

-N2O like Nitrogen and Argon is inert and Harmless.They are natural components of air.
-But,whatever taken for long time is bad.
-Even 100% O2,taken for long time is harmful.
-No fasting needed for N2O anxiolysis.
-Patient is conscious in N2O anxiolysis.
-Vomiting will not occur in anxiolysis.
- Vomiting is no big deal in conscious patients.
