A CEREC crown is a type of dental crown that can be created and placed in a single appointment using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. The acronym CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.
Unlike traditional crowns that require multiple visits and temporary crowns while a dental lab creates the permanent restoration, a CEREC crown is milled from a single block of ceramic in the dentist's office.
How a CEREC crown is made
The same-day procedure for a CEREC crown follows these general steps:
1️⃣Examination and preparation
Digital impression: A special intraoral camera takes a digital, three-dimensional image of your tooth, eliminating the need for messy traditional impressions.
2️⃣Crown design: Using specialized CAD software, the dentist designs the new crown to ensure a precise fit and natural appearance.
3️⃣Milling: The design is sent to an in-office milling machine, which carves the crown from a block of ceramic.
4️⃣Placement: Once milled, the crown is polished and bonded to your tooth using dental cement.
