Wisdom teeth, or the third molars, typically emerge in your mouth as the last sets of molars, usually between the ages of 17 to 25. While some people have little to no difficulties with their wisdom teeth, many concerns require care. Because of the dietary modifications of today and the reduced jaw proportions, these extra molars often do not have enough space to grow properly, and thus create problems when they emerge.
1. Infection:
This hard-to-reach area is perfect for bacteria, leading to painful condition like pericoronitis (gum infection), swelling or even serious abscess.
2. Damage to Adjacent Molar:
It's plaque trap! The angled position makes brushing and flossing at the gap between the two teeth difficult. This inevitably leads to a severe cavity in your otherwise healthy second molar, which may require a root canal or even an extraction.
3. Pressure and Crowding:
An impacted wisdom tooth acts like a constant pushing force on the teeth in front of it, which can cause shifting of your smile.
4. Cyst Formation:
Sometimes a fluid-filled sac (cyst) can form around the trapped wisdom tooth. Typically it is a benign condition, but it can grows large enough to damage nearby teeth or bone.
A proactive check-up is the wisest choice!
