Hope for Ectodermal Dysplasia:
Ectodermal dysplasia is a genetic disorder affecting the development of the teeth, hair, nails and sweat glands.
People with ectodermal dysplasia have multiple missing teeth, and the teeth they do have may be malformed.
Dental treatment of ectodermal dysplasia improves appearance, confidence and chewing ability. Dentists can use a variety of methods to preserve the patient’s own teeth, improve the appearance of the patient’s teeth, and even replace the patient’s missing teeth!
We saw Eric (not his real name) in 2009 when he was just 19 years old. We treated him with a combination of braces, crowns and dental implants. It was our privilege to see Eric gain confidence over the course of treatment. It culminated in 2011, when Eric smiled for the first time in our clinic. On his birthday, no less!
We are delighted that Eric is now happily married. Congratulations!
If you know someone who has ectodermal dysplasia, or if you yourself have ectodermal dysplasia, know that there is hope. With appropriate dental treatment, people with ectodermal dysplasia can eat, speak and smile, just like everyone else.
