KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will again host the annual International College of Dentists (ICD) Asia Pacific Congress and Trade Exhibition.
Some 1,500 renowned dentists, speakers and delegates from the region will congregate here for the three-day event in March themed “Emerging Trends for Excellence in Dentistry”.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam will open the event to be held at Hotel Pullman, Bangsar, from March 11-13.
ICD international president Prof Philip Dowell and secretary-general Dr John V. Hinterman will also be present at the event, the second annual meeting of the congress.
Event organising chairman Datuk Dr How Kim Chuan said ICD was founded almost 100 years ago to bring accomplished dentists together to promote dental education, leadership and humanitarian causes globally.
“ICD Fellows are dentists who have provided meritorious service to the profession or the public.
“There are now some 12,000 ICD Fellows in 122 countries who are leaders, educators or clinicians contributing their expertise towards humanitarian causes,” he said in an interview.
In Malaysia, among several prominent honorary ICD Fellows are MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and philanthropist Tan Sri Tee Hock Seng.
Liow was inducted in 2009 for his support and contributions to the advancement of the dental profession when he was health minister.
Last year, Liow was inducted as a distinguished honorary ICD Fellow.
Tee was awarded the honorary fellowship last year for his role in community work and oral health promotion in the country.
Dr How, who is also ICD Asia Pacific Section president, said the scientific congress would feature all aspects of dentistry, including a trade exhibition and a grand induction ceremony.
About 80 booths are expected to be set up, showcasing the latest dental technology and equipment.
“About 100 deserving Fellows from the Asia Pacific region will be inducted by Prof Dowell.
“They represent the top 4% of the dental profession in each country,” he said, adding that an ICD council meeting would also be held to map out future plans and projects.
The first ICD Asia Pacific congress was held here in March last year.
