Sometimes, growth means being willing to unlearn what you thought you already knew.
I recently attended the Dentsleep MARPE course with Dr Christine, and it reminded me that continuing education isn't just about learning a new technique. It's about rethinking how we assess patients, approach diagnosis, and make clinical decisions.
One important takeaway for me:
**Not every MARPE case will resolve an airway issue. But for patients with transverse maxillary deficiency and co-existing airway concerns, MARPE may be a valuable treatment option to consider.**
The key is understanding the relationship between maxillary transverse deficiency and airway function, identifying suitable patients, and recognising that airway issues can have multiple contributing factors.
Clinical findings such as posterior crossbite and lingually inclined lower molars may also provide useful clues when assessing transverse discrepancies.
For me, the real learning goes beyond understanding how to perform MARPE. It's about knowing when to consider it, how to incorporate it into comprehensive orthodontic treatment planning, and when additional assessment or other interventions may be needed.
I'm bringing these lessons back into my orthodontic practice, continuing to question, refine, and improve the way I approach each case.
Thank you, Dr Christine, for sharing your knowledge, and to everyone who made this learning experience meaningful.
**Unlearn. Relearn. Keep growing.**
