Root Canal Treatment is able to save a tooth from removal or extraction. However, a tooth will be weakened after Root Canal Treatment and requires something to protect it from fractures/ breaking.
Traditionally, crown is required after root canal treatment especially for premolars & molars and it is the standard of care. However, crown requires shaving down the entire tooth structure and this actually weakens the tooth especially at the gum area. Hence when a crown fails and break, it usually breaks off the entire tooth structure.
With the latest restorative techniques and advancements, Overlay is able to provide the same protection like crown to a root canal treated teeth without cutting the whole teeth.
✅ No excessively cutting the whole teeth - Only 1.5mm - 2mm is removed from the chewing surface.
✅ Most of the natural healthy tooth structure is preserved ( shown in pictures) - Tooth is stronger and will last longer
✅ Overlay is easier to clean - Cavity / caries tends to form around the crown at the gum area because it is hard to clean & hard to detect, it is usually too late when it can be detected.
