EMS Airflow is a Swiss dental technology for performing dental prophylaxis, or teeth cleaning, in a minimally invasive and more comfortable way than traditional scaling methods. It uses a controlled stream of air, warm water, and fine powder to gently remove plaque, stains, and biofilm from the tooth surface.
The system is a core component of Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a professional oral hygiene protocol developed by EMS Dental.
The EMS Airflow procedure involves these steps:
Biofilm disclosure: A harmless colored dye is applied to the teeth to make the invisible biofilm (plaque) visible to both the dentist and the patient. This helps target the treatment and educates the patient on proper brushing techniques.
Air polishing: The Airflow handpiece delivers a precise, high-pressure stream of air, warm water, and a very fine erythritol-based powder. This combination effectively and gently removes stains, plaque, and soft deposits from the surfaces of the teeth, gums, and tongue.
Scaling (if needed): If any harder, mineralized calculus (tartar) remains after air polishing, a minimal amount of ultrasonic scaling is performed using a "no pain" Piezon instrument.
Final rinse and check: A final rinse and check ensure that all biofilm and stains have been removed.
