It’s May 15th again, which means World Orthodontic Health Day is back! ✨
Beyond straight teeth alone, orthodontics shapes how people chew, breathe, speak, and smile; whilst also supports oral health, facial balance, confidence, and quality of life.
For Miss Q, orthodontics did exactly those. I remember her walking in for consultation many moons back. Her main concern was the slanted smile. She was rejected for treatment by an institution and the dejection was clearly evident.
What I found of her malocclusion: Tooth fusion, impeded eruption of lower 7s, cant, buccal crossbite, bimax proclination, class III skeletal! As a young orthodontist then (still young now 🤪), I recall texting my lecturer and said “But I never had such difficult combinations in university!”. The lecturer laughed and said this is how we grow as a clinician. Dismantle the problems and tackle them one by one.
And so, tackling the problems we did. Treatment was carried out with fixed braces, removal of 4 premolars + 1 impeded second molar + 1 wisdom tooth, upper anchorage appliance and jaw surgery.
On the day when braces were taken off, I could see the confidence in Miss Q’s new smile and that boosted my confidence a wee bit too. Perhaps, the magic dusts of orthodontics do fall on the clinician as well. ☺️
