Many patients ask if dental implants cause sensitivity to hot or cold foods. The reality is that the implant itself does not cause sensitivity. Dental implants are made of titanium and do not have nerves like natural teeth.
However, some patients who lost a tooth many years ago may experience sensitivity after their implant crown is placed. This usually happens because over time the surrounding bone and gums can recede slightly. When the new crown is placed, a small space can exist between the implant crown and the neighboring natural teeth, exposing areas of the natural tooth that were not previously involved in chewing.
These newly exposed areas may be more sensitive to temperature, especially at the beginning, because they were not previously stimulated during normal biting and chewing.
The good news is that in most cases this sensitivity is temporary and improves as the area adapts.
Dental implants are still the most stable and natural-feeling solution to replace missing teeth, restoring both function and confidence in your smile.
