An impacted wisdom tooth may press against or damage the tooth next to it. Removing the wisdom tooth may be recommended to help protect the neighboring tooth and surrounding bone. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) can evaluate the area with an examination and imaging. Find an OMS near you at MyOMS.org.

Corrective jaw surgery – also known as orthognathic surgery – can improve breathing, chewing and speaking. While the patient’s appearance may be altered, the surgery is performed to correct functional problems. Learn more by visiting MyOMS.org.

Did you know wisdom teeth are often easier to remove at a younger age, before the roots are fully developed and while the jawbone is softer? Waiting longer can make removal more complex because the teeth may be closer to nerves and the bone becomes denser over time. Learn more about wisdom teeth removal at MyOMS.org.

Dentoalveolar surgeries are the procedures most often performed by OMSs. These are a group of procedures that involve adding, reshaping or removing hard and soft tissues supporting teeth.

Types of dentoalveolar surgeries include:
- Extraction of a tooth (such as removal of wisdom teeth)
- Complicated tooth extractions (such as impacted teeth)
- Removal of noncancerous lesions, tumors or cysts
- Recontouring or enhancement of the alveolar bone to support placement of a dental implant
- Preparing gum and bone for implant, crown or denture placement
- Exposure of teeth for orthodontics

Visit MyOMS.org to learn more and fine an OMS in your area.
