If you need a crown, does that automatically mean you need a root canal too?
No.
A crown and a root canal solve different problems.
A crown is used to restore and protect a tooth that may be weakened, broken, heavily restored or damaged.
A root canal treats the inside of the tooth when the pulp — the tissue containing nerves and blood vessels — becomes inflamed, infected or otherwise cannot remain healthy.
Sometimes a tooth needs a crown and the nerve is still healthy.
Sometimes the damage extends deep enough that root canal treatment is also necessary.
And after a root canal, a crown is often recommended to help protect and restore the tooth.
That's why the decision shouldn't be:
“Crown = root canal.”
It should be:
“What condition is the tooth actually in?”
Good treatment starts with the diagnosis — not an automatic assumption.
