🦷 The Real Reason Toothaches Can Feel So Intense

A severe toothache is often a sign that the problem has reached the dental pulp—the living tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels.

Unlike most tissues in the body, the pulp is surrounded by hard enamel and dentin, leaving almost no room for swelling. When deep decay, a crack, or an infection causes inflammation, pressure builds inside this confined space and compresses the nerve fibers. This is why a toothache can become intense, throbbing, and difficult to ignore.

The pain may also spread to the jaw, ear, temple, or neighboring teeth because the same nerve network supplies much of the face. Many people notice that toothaches feel worse at night, as lying down can increase blood flow to the head, further increasing pressure within an already inflamed tooth.

Although painkillers may temporarily ease discomfort, they do not treat the underlying cause. If left untreated, the inflamed pulp can lose its blood supply and become infected, allowing the infection to spread beyond the root into the surrounding bone and soft tissues, where a dental abscess may develop.

Early dental care is the best way to relieve pain, preserve the natural tooth whenever possible, and prevent more extensive treatment. Persistent tooth pain should never be ignored—it is the body's way of signaling that something needs attention.
