FDI warns against illegal dental practice worldwide
🚨 Would you trust someone without a dental licence to treat your teeth?
A new global report from the FDI World Dental Federation warns that illegal dental practice is putting patients at serious risk across the world—and the problem may be far bigger than many people realise. 🦷⚠️
📊 The report, based on responses from 49 National Dental Associations, found that:
❗ 95% of countries have laws regulating dentistry—but fewer than half believe those laws are effectively enforced.
⚠️ 58% reported cases where patients were harmed by illegal dental treatment, while 62% said they don't even have reliable data on how widespread the problem really is.
😷 From unsafe tooth extractions and fake braces to unlicensed cosmetic dental procedures, illegal practice can lead to severe infections, permanent damage and even life-threatening complications.
📢 FDI is urging governments, regulators and dental associations to strengthen enforcement, improve public awareness and ensure patients receive care only from qualified, licensed dental professionals.
