Why polishing after resin infiltration matters?

Research shows that infiltrated enamel surfaces without polishing are significantly rougher, which can promote plaque retention. Proper polishing helps:

✔️ Reduce surface roughness
✔️ Decrease bacterial adhesion
✔️ Maintain the caries-preventive effect of resin infiltration

A smooth, polished surface supports better aesthetics, biofilm control, and long-term treatment stability.

Polishing materials may vary. Here are the ones that work best for me in my clinical practice.

• RETREATMENT • Third time. Same teeth. A completely different outcome.

Retreatment of enamel defect cases is one of the most demanding procedures we do — especially when it’s the third attempt (the first two were completed elsewhere). Managing expectations, correcting previous work and preserving remaining enamel requires a precise, minimally invasive strategy.

This case was approached step-by-step:
🔺 Bleaching with 16% carbamide peroxide
🔺 Resin infiltration (ICON technique)
🔺 Selective composite bonding for final aesthetics
🔺 Finishing & polishing

No aggressive preparation. No unnecessary removal of healthy structure.
Just careful diagnosis, controlled layering and respect for the biology of enamel.
