악안면성형재건이란 악안면영역(턱과 얼굴영역)에 대한 선천적인 기형 또는 종양이나 외상에 의한 후천적 기관결손 및 추형을 기능적으로 수복하고 형태적으로 재건함으로써 정상적이며 보다 심미적인 상태로 사회로의 복귀를 가능하게 하도록 하는 외과학의 한 분야입니다.

우리나라의 악안면성형재건외과는 1095년대에 육군병원 구강악안면외과에서 한국전쟁중에 발생한 악안면전상 환자에게 피부이식, 골이식 등 악안면 성형을 해줌으로써 시작되었으며, 그 후 서울대학교 구강악안면 외과 교수로 30년간 재직하셨던 민병일 명예 교수가 1959년 국내에서는 처음으로 주걱턱 성형수술의 치험례에 대해 치과의사협회 정기 학술대회에서 발표하기도 하였습니다.

1962년 구강악안면외과의사들이 중심이 되어 대한악안면성형재건외과학회를 창립하게 되

었고, 그 후 교통사고나 싸움에 의한 악안면골 골절, 언청이, 안면기형, 주걱턱, 구강암, 낭종, 치아 임플란트 등에 관한 수술과 연구를 계속 시행하여 임상적, 학술적으로 많은 발전을 이룩해 오고 있습니다
