Oral pyogenic granuloma
Common, Inflammatory hyperplasia.
Non-neoplastic,painless tumor like nodular growth in the oral cavity.
Appears red to purple in color.May be smooth or lobulated and is soft to palpation.
Most lesions appear on the gingiva(most commonly on the maxillary or upper jaw gingiva but can also appear on the tongue and lips
Lesions are symptomless but early lesions bleed easily.
Causes
Poor Oral Hygiene
Hormonal changes eg in pregnancy hence most commonly referred to as pregnancy tumor
Management
Some regress after pregnancy but may need surgical excision before if they cause discomfort when eating
Prevention
Maintaining OH and visiting a dentist for a routine check up and cleaning when you become expectant
Complications
No complications
High recurrence incidence
However after surgically excision they may leave a mucogingjval defect after that may need correction by grafting
