Study suggests that Vitamin D deficiency, especially in children can negatively impact enamel formation and mineralization, making teeth structurally weaker and more vulnerable to external challenges. Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and acts as a protective shield for the inner tooth structures. Its proper development and maintenance depend significantly on the availability of calcium and phosphate—both regulated by Vitamin D.
Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and maintains serum calcium and phosphate levels, which are critical for enamel maturation. Inadequate Vitamin D levels can disrupt this balance, resulting in hypomineralized enamel that is thinner and softer than normal. Such enamel is less resistant to acidic challenges from plaque biofilms and dietary sugars, increasing the risk of early demineralization and caries development.
Evidence from clinical and epidemiological studies indicates a higher prevalence of dental caries and enamel defects among individuals with low serum 25(OH)D concentrations, especially in children during tooth development. These defects may include enamel hypoplasia and increased porosity, both of which predispose teeth to sensitivity and bacterial invasion.
In addition to caries risk, weakened enamel due to Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to increased susceptibility to mechanical damage, including enamel fractures and chipping under normal chewing forces. This structural compromise may accelerate tooth wear and contribute to long-term restorative needs.
Overall, maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels is not only essential for skeletal health but also crucial for preserving enamel integrity and reducing the likelihood of dental complications such as decay, hypersensitivity, and structural failure.
