Patient :-"Hi doctor... I'm fed up of my relatives' opinion and comments about my child's dark front teeth.. how is it caused?? I don't have any cavities.. Why is my child's teeth getting decayed so fast???
Me:-"Haha..Good question!!!
In fact the decay,or dental caries is caused by sugars left in your child’s mouth, which turns into an acid & starts to break down hard tissues of his or her teeth. Children has high risk for tooth decay for some simple reasons like:
1-Breastfed child's mouth contains milk which contains sugar and this causes the harboring of bacteria and causes breakdown of child teeth as soon as they erupt.
2-Many children and adolescents are careless in their oral hygiene habits."

Patient:- "Oh.. Is that so??..Is there any way I can avoid or prevent my child's tooth decay ????"

Me:- "And the answer is...Yes, The tooth decay is preventable!
Simple...Start oral hygiene habits early. After breastfeeding the childs gum can be wiped with a soft cotton cloth damped in water.
The child's first visit to a dentist should be just after his or her 1st birthday or just after the first tooth erupts. After the age of two, brush child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Use dental floss at least once a day, preferably before they go to bed.
Supervision is very important.
Don’t allow the child to brush on their own and sleep. The flow of saliva decreases during sleep and thus the teeth is more vulnerable to cavities during the sleep.
Do not allow your child to nibble food or sip sugary drinks continuously.
Keep in mind that a low sugary and less sticky food also helps to keep tooth decay away.
Drinking water frequently can also reduce the possibility of new cavities.
At the age of six, Dental sealants can br applied to vulnerable teeth which protect your children’s teeth from cavities. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, and they act as a shield between the tooth and harmful bacteria.
Finally, make sure your child visits a pediatric dentist approximately every six months for a check-up and routine cleaning!!!".
