Extra Teeth in Children: What Parents Should Know

Can a child have an extra tooth? Yes. An extra tooth beyond the normal 20 baby teeth or 32 permanent teeth is called a supernumerary tooth. It can be in the front (mesiodens), at the back, or hidden in the jaw.

Good to know:
✅ The most common type is the mesiodens, between the two upper front teeth
✅ It can cause crowding or twisted teeth
✅ It may delay a permanent tooth from coming in
✅ It is often found only on an X-ray

Signs to watch:
🦷 Teeth that look too close together
🦷 Unexpected gaps between teeth
🦷 A permanent tooth that doesn’t come in on time

After surgery, a child may still need time to learn to keep the mouth closed and breathe through the nose. Some children need follow-up care for a longer period.
