Consequences of Tooth loss 🦷
1. Bone Loss (Jaw Shrinkage)
The bone that used to support the tooth begins to resorb (shrink).
This leads to decreased facial support, making the face look older or collapsed over time.
2. Shifting of Nearby Teeth
Adjacent teeth start to tilt or drift into the empty space.
Opposing tooth (from upper or lower jaw) may over-erupt.
This causes malalignment and bite (occlusion) problems.
3. Difficulty Chewing
Missing teeth reduce chewing efficiency.
Can lead to digestive problems due to swallowing larger food pieces.
4. Speech Problems
Loss of front or multiple teeth can affect pronunciation of sounds like "s", "t", "f", "v"
5. Increased Stress on Remaining Teeth
Fewer teeth have to do more work.
This can cause wear, fractures, or gum problems in remaining teeth.
6. Aesthetic Impact
Gaps affect smile appearance.
Leads to reduced confidence and self-esteem.
7. TMJ Problems
Altered bite due to missing teeth can strain jaw joints, causing:
Jaw pain
Headaches
Clicking or popping sounds
8. Gum Issues & Food Lodgement
Gaps trap food, increasing risk of:
Bad breath
Gum infection
Sensitivity
9. Difficulty Wearing Dentures Later,
more bone loss = harder to fit and retain dentures.
