Metronidazole in Dentistry ⬇️

🔹 Nitroimidazole antibiotic
🔹 Bactericidal: forms toxic metabolites that damage DNA
🔹 Active only against obligate anaerobes and some protozoa
🔹 No aerobic coverage

Dental uses
🔹 ANUG/ANUP = classic indication
🔹 With amoxicillin for aggressive/refractory periodontitis
🔹 Adjunct in severe odontogenic infections with anaerobic component

Adverse effects
🔹 Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol
🔹 Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 3 days after
🔹 Metallic taste
🔹 GI upset
🔹 Dark urine may occur

Drug interactions
🔹 Warfarin → ↑ INR / bleeding risk
🔹 Lithium → toxicity risk

Precautions
🔹 Use caution in liver disease
