DENTAL CARE POST DIWALI

Diwali is a time when homes are filled with an array of mouth watering sweets, from laddoos and jalebis to barfis and gulab jamuns. The sugar in these sweets provides a feast for harmful bacteria in your mouth, leading to the production of acids that can erode tooth enamel, causing cavities and gum problems.

1. Brush Thoroughly
Twice a day: Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. After Diwali, it's especially important to remove any leftover sugar or sticky substances from sweets like ladoos, barfis, or chocolates, which can lead to cavities.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: It will help avoid damage to gums while cleaning effectively.

2. Rinse with Mouthwash
Consider using an antibacterial mouthwash to kill bacteria and help with breath freshness. It also helps to prevent plaque buildup, which can lead to gum disease or tooth decay.

3. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water after consuming sweets, as it helps wash away food particles and neutralizes acids in the mouth. Avoid sugary drinks, as they can contribute to cavities.

4. Avoid Sticky Foods
Post-Diwali, try to avoid consuming sticky sweets like toffees or chewy candies, as they can cling to your teeth and promote plaque buildup.

5. Watch for Sensitivity or Pain
Check for any sensitivity: If you experience tooth sensitivity after indulging in cold or hot foods or sweets, it may be a sign of a cavity or gum issue. Sensitivity can also be a result of worn enamel or gum recession.

6. Schedule a Dental Checkup
Routine dental visit: After a period of indulgence, it’s wise to schedule a routine check-up with your dentist. They will clean your teeth professionally, remove plaque buildup, and detect any early signs of tooth decay or gum disease.
Professional cleaning: A dentist or hygienist will provide a more thorough cleaning that is not possible at home, especially after a period of heavy sugar consumption.
