Red meat consumption is associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes
In a recently published study, the association between red meat consumption and type 2 diabetes (T2D) was examined.
Results
1. Compared to the lowest quintile, those in the highest quintile of red meat intake had a higher risk of T2D,
2. The risk of type 2 diabetes was 62% higher for total red meat consumption, 51% higher for processed red meat consumption and 40% higher for unprocessed red meat.
3. The risk of type 2 diabetes reduced by 29-41% upon substituting one serving/day of red meat with 1 serving/day of nuts and legumes,
4. Substituting 1 serving/d of dairy for total, processed, or unprocessed red meat was also associated with significantly lower risk of T2D.
Take home message
1. One should limit/minimize the consumption of red meat, especially processed red meat.
2. Alternative sources of proteins (fish, eggs, poultry, vegetarian sources) should be looked at, in order to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Limitations
The study shows an association between red meat consumption and type 2 diabetes and does not prove cause and effect. At the same time, randomized controlled trials are difficult, as type 2 diabetes takes several years to develop.
