Babies should begin using an open cup between 6 and 9 months of age. During this time, developing babies are typically starting to use their tongue, jaw and lips independently from each other.
Often, parents find a cup that "works" for their child, which is usually a spouted sippy cup. Spouted sippy cups were designed by an engineer who was tired of his children spilling liquids on the carpet.
The cups were not at all designed with oral development in mind, but with fantastic branding and the convenience of a no-spill cup, they quickly became the "go to" after graduating from the bottle.
Continued use of these cups can lead to harmful changes of the orofacial complex, including forward resting tongue posture, open/anterior bite, and mouth breathing.
