I had the opportunity to spend a day at Dr. Audrey Yoon’s practice, shadowing her, observing her clinical approach, and getting to see MARPE placement firsthand.

Dr. Yoon is a leading voice in MARPE, customized expansion, and the role of maxillary expansion in airway and sleep-disordered breathing. Seeing the appliance being placed and, more importantly, understanding the thought process behind its use was an incredible learning experience.

There’s a very different kind of learning that happens when you step into someone’s clinical space and watch them work. You pick up on the nuances that no course or textbook can quite capture, the way they assess a patient, communicate, make decisions, and adapt in real time.

I walked away with so much to think about, a notebook full of takeaways, and an even greater appreciation for clinicians who continue to question, research, and push the field forward.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn from one of the clinicians shaping the conversation around airway-focused orthodontics and expansion.

Just back from The Breathe Institute in Los Angeles, where I completed Dr Soroush Zaghi’s training in functional frenuloplasty.

What I’m bringing back to the clinic is a more careful approach to deciding when a release is actually indicated, and when it isn’t. Not every tight frenulum needs treatment. The functional picture is what should drive the decision, not the anatomy alone.

I keep going back to courses like this because pediatric dentistry is changing quickly, and I would rather keep questioning what I think I know than settle into habits.

Grateful for the week, and for the group I got to learn alongside.

Infant mortality was extremely high in previous centuries, typically peaking at 6 months to 4 years of age - a time period temporally corresponding to tooth eruption. 🦷

Teething time was a period not only of great anxiety but also of intense fear because of the serious symptoms the children showed.

Unfortunately, some of the teething remedies used by anxious parents at that time, did more harm than good. ❌

For example - In the 6th century, treatments for teething included eating or placing hare brains on the gums & drinking dog’s milk 🤯❕

The more benign of these cures included giving the child a dry bread crust, and sticks of licorice dipped in honey or wax candles to chew on 🕯️
