Why Do Gaps Between Teeth Increase With Age?
Many people think teeth remain in the same position throughout life. But the truth is teeth can slowly shift as we age, which may lead to new gaps or spaces between teeth. 🦷
Here are the common reasons:
✔ Gum Disease
One of the most common causes is Periodontitis.
When gums and the supporting bone weaken due to infection, teeth lose support and start drifting apart, creating visible gaps.
✔ Bone Loss Around Teeth
With age, the bone that holds teeth in place can gradually reduce. This loss of support allows teeth to move slightly over time.
✔ Missing Teeth
If a missing tooth is not replaced with a bridge or implant, nearby teeth slowly shift into the empty space, creating gaps elsewhere.
✔ Gum Recession
As gums recede, the space between teeth becomes more visible, often forming small triangular gaps called “black triangles.”
✔ Tooth Grinding
Habitual grinding or clenching (Bruxism) can slowly change the shape and contact points of teeth, leading to spacing over time.
✔ Tongue thrusting
Strong tongue pressure on front teeth over years can cause spacing. This is sometimes related to **Tongue thrust habit.
Common in people who:
1.Push tongue forward while swallowing
2.Have mouth breathing habits
⚠️ Important
If you suddenly notice new gaps between your teeth, it could be an early sign of gum disease or bone loss.
Early treatment can prevent further shifting and save your teeth.
