January has been full of surprises (and it’s only been a week)! While the third wave of COVID has made us home-bound again, I’m still grateful we made it to another year (mostly) safe and sound. Now, they say you should always look forward, but this new year, I happened to look back, at a very special elderly lady, who had an equally special request-she wanted us to make her dentures…at home! Sit tight, it’s about to get interesting!
Today’s story is about an old lady who was recovering from COVID. When she was diagnosed with COVID, being elderly, she was shifted to a hospital, where, as fate would have it, her dentures got lost. After recovering, she came back home but was finding it very difficult to eat without dentures. Her already frail state hampered her from visiting the dentist for multiple follow-ups to make a new set of dentures, and that is when I stepped in!
Her regular dentist came to me with a request-he wanted me to visit the old lady at home and make her dentures!
Dentures? At home? I was initially skeptical, considering the COVID situation, but the lady needed help. Without her dentures, she could barely eat anything. Without proper food, she’d continue to be weak, prolonging her recovery; and till she recovered, she wouldn’t be able to go to the dentist to fix her dilemma. I was prepared to break this vicious cycle, and so, we visited the lady at home, and, over a period of multiple appointments, made her a new set of dentures!
One of my favorite parts about being a prosthodontist is the smile I get from a satisfied patient. Knowing that it’s my hard work that enables her to smile so confidently sparks joy in me, and reminds me what I’m here to do- help people.
A word of caution, though-dental treatment at home is not ideally recommended (according to DCI guidelines), but since this was a special case, I took a call, and believed it was justified.
