IMPORTANCE OF ANTERIOR TEETH.

➡️ Anterior Teeth helps to cut and tear the food,
➡️ Their aesthetic appearance is of great importance as they are visible during Smiling, Eating, and Talking.
➡️ Anterior teeth, premolars, and often the maxillary first molar, along with the surrounding gingiva, compose the esthetic zone of the mouth.
➡️ Changes in the color or translucency of the visible tooth structure, along with thin soft tissues or biotype, diminish the chance for a successful esthetic treatment outcome.
HOW MANY ANTERIOR TEETH ARE IN A PERMANENT DENTITION?
In permanent dentition, the anterior area contains a total of 12 teeth. The Central Incisors , Lateral Incisors, and Canines of both the maxillary and mandibular jaws, make up the anterior teeth.
Damaged, discolored , fractured, or malpositioned anteriors warrants for dental treatment . It's both functionally and aesthetically required .

WHAT IS PROSTHESIS ?

Prosthesis is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part, which may be lost through trauma, disease, or a condition present at birth. Prostheses are intended to restore the normal functions of the missing body part.
False teeth are known as Dental Prosthesis.

Replacement Of Missing, Damaged Or Unaesthetic Tooth/ Teeth By Dental Prosthesis Helps The Patient To Rehabilitate Structure And Function Of The Lost Tissues.

WHAT IS FAULTY PROSTHESIS?

Faulty Prosthesis can cause damage more than relief. It damages abudment ( supporting ) teeth and surrounding structures of oral mucosa.
Failure of fixed dental prosthesis may be
- Biological
- Mechanical
- Aesthetic

It may cause:
- Discomfort
- Caries
- Pulpal Injury
- Periodontal Breakdown
- Occlusal Problems
- Tooth Perforation
- Tooth Fracture
- Loosening/ Dislodgement/ Prosthetic Fracture

Presenting one such case of faulty prosthesis, where patient was not happy and very conscious about her looks after she got the bridge work done at a dental clinic somewhere. We removed her old prosthesis and replaced it with new zirconia bridge . You can see the before and after result.

Nail biting, also known as onychophagy or onychophagia, is an oral compulsive habit of biting one's fingernails.
You may also find yourself doing it when you’re bored, hungry or feeling insecure. Most nail biting is automatic -- you do it without thinking.Sometimes, nail biting can be a sign of emotional or mental stress. It tends to show up in people who are nervous, anxious or feeling down. It’s a way to cope with these feelings.
Nail biting won’t typically cause permanent damage. But it definitely has its downsides.
Some of the risks of biting your nails include:

➡️ Soreness or infection in and on the skin around your nails
➡️ Damage to the tissue that makes your nails grow
➡️ Changes in how your nails look
➡️ Abnormal growth
➡️ More frequent colds and other illnesses from placing dirty fingers in your mouth
➡️ DAMAGE TO YOUR TEETH FROM CHEWING HARD NAILS
The force of biting nails can be transferred to the root of teeth and lead to

🦷 Tooth Fracture
🦷Apical Root Resorption
🦷Alveolar Destruction
🦷Malocclusion
🦷Temporomandibular disorders
🦷Gum injuries

Nail biting is not an isolated symptom. It can be one symptom from a cluster of symptoms, all of which as well as the motivation behind NB should be evaluated, assessed and managed.

When you reach a certain age, it's normal to have questions about whether dental implants are right for you. You may think about what kind of success rate you'll have with implants based on your age. You may wonder whether dental implants work just as well for older patients as they do for younger ones.

Whether 80 or 90 years old, older people can benefit from dental implants and recover with the same predictability as younger ones. Most patients, particularly the elderly, should get dental implants as they are the gold standard for teeth replacement. As a result, there is no such thing as old age for dental implants.
Dental implants often change older people's lives for the better, giving them improved physical health and more confidence.

BENEFITS AND ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

🦷Dental Implants behave like natural teeth
🦷Dental Implants can last a lifetime
🦷Dental Implants prevent bone loss
🦷Dental Implants keep adjacent teeth stable
🦷Dental Implants can help keep you free of gum disease
🦷Dental Implants can prevent facial sagging and premature aging.

So, no compromises with the quality of life, eat healthy, stay healthy. Book your appointment at 07442476760, for more details.

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL ?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that relieves pain caused by an infected or abscessed tooth.
During the root canal process, the inflamed pulp is removed. The surfaces inside the tooth are then cleaned and disinfected, and a filling is placed to seal the space. The procedure is often referred to as ENDODONTIC THERAPY.

Need for RCT usually happens when
- a cavity is left untreated for a long time.
- tooth becomes cracked or damaged due to trauma.

SYMPTOMS THAT INDICATE YOU MAY NEED ROOT CANAL TREATMENT ?

🦷Tooth Pain That Doesn’t Go Away
🦷Sensitivity To Hot Or Cold
🦷Swollen Gums
🦷 Pimple On The Gums
🦷 Tooth Discoloration
🦷Pain When Pressure Is Applied
🦷A Chipped Or Cracked Tooth
🦷Loose Tooth

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE ?

✅ Prevent infection from spreading to other teeth.
✅ Ease the symptoms associated with an infected tooth.
✅ Reduce the risk of jawbone damage.
✅ Eliminate the need for tooth extraction.

EATING DISORDERS are dangerous psychological conditions in which one’s negative feelings, often about their bodies or food, affects their eating behavior.

In addition to having a negative impact on an individual’s health and quality of life, eating disorders also affect self-image, relationships with families and friends, and performance in school or at work.

Eating disorders such as ANOREXIA , BULIMIA and BINGE EATING DISORDER , all have negative effects on the mouth. Their symptoms can range from slight to severe and dental professionals are often the among the first to identify possible red flags.

WHAT IS ANOREXIA ?

- People with Anorexia Nervosa limit their intake of food and drink and have a fear of gaining weight.
- Many people with anorexia attribute their self worth to their caloric intake and punish themselves for eating too much or eating the “wrong types” of foods.
- They try to get rid of excess calories and weight through exercise, vomiting, taking laxatives or using enemas.

WHAT IS BULIMIA ?

- Bulimia nervosa is a binge eating disorder and is diagnosed based on binge-purge patterns of suffers.
- Such people binge (taking in an excessive amount of calories in one sitting) and purge (expelling food/calories through excessive exercise, taking laxatives or forcing yourself to vomit) .

WHAT IS BINGE EATING DISORDER ?

- Eaters will often take in large quantities of food and/or drink without feeling like they are in control of what they are doing,
- These binges can be planned ahead of time with the sufferer buying “special” foods to binge on, or they could be spontaneous.
- Binge eaters are not " overindulging " on foods. These are not enjoyable experiences and often cause a lot of distress and embarrassment for sufferers.
- They eat faster than normal, eating until uncomfortably full, eating large amounts of food when you don't feel hungry, eating alone through embarrassment, and feelings of disgust, shame or guilt during/ after the binge.
- Unlike bulimia sufferers, those with binge eating disorder will not purge after a binge.

PREVENTION

- Eating disorders arise from a variety of physical, emotional and social issues all of which need to be addressed to help prevent and treat these disorders.
- Family and friends can help by setting good examples about eating and offering positive comments about healthy eating practices.
- While eating disorders appear to focus on body image, food and weight, they are often related to many other issues.
- Referral to health professionals and encouragement to seek treatment is critical as early diagnosis and intervention greatly improve the opportunities for recovery.

HOW CAN EATING DISORDERS AFFECT THE HEALTH OF YOUR MOUTH ?

- All of these eating disorders, have negative effects on sufferers' bodies and should be treated as serious health conditions.
- Potential negative effects of vitamin and nutrient deficiencies can cause the body to shut down and not function properly.
- Revealing oral signs of eating disorders include:
🦷 ENAMEL EROSION
🦷 DRY MOUTH
🦷 ENLARGED SALIVARY GLANDS
🦷 CRACKED/ DRY LIPS
🦷 MOUTH SORES
🦷 TOOTH DECAY
🦷 SENSITIVE TEETH
🦷 BRUISING AND/ OR INJURY TO THE MOUTH

If you suffer from an eating disorder these practices can reduce oral health problems associated with it :
✅ Maintain meticulous oral health care related to toothbrushing and flossing.
✅ Immediately after vomiting/ throwing up, DO NOT brush, but rinse with baking soda to help neutralize the effects of the stomach acid.
✅ Consult your dentist about your specific treatment needs.

While we may all react to stress differently when our immune system is weakened, it triggers our brain to seek comfort foods or form unhealthy habits like drinking alcohol and smoking. These damaging habits can place your oral health at risk.
Some of the stress related dental problems are:
🦷 POOR ORAL HYGIENE

➡️ When stressed, self-care becomes less important, and indulging in mind-boosting foods high in carbs, sugar, and caffeine brings comfort.
➡️ An imbalanced diet and inattention to an oral hygiene routine can cause plaque buildup, caries, and even tooth loss.

🦷 DRY MOUTH

➡️ When you are stressed, you experience reduced saliva production resulting in more plaque buildup and an increased likelihood of dental issues.
➡️ Overuse of alcohol and to***co can also cause dry mouth leading to tooth decay and gum disease.

🦷 CLENCHED JAWS

➡️ Muscle tension helps guard the body against injury and pain, but constant muscle tension in your jaw from chronic stress can cause TMJ.
➡️ This condition causes - pain in your jaws and around your ears.
- difficulty opening your mouth or chewing food
- hear a clicking noise in your temporomandibular joint.

🦷 TEETH GRINDING

➡️ Teeth grinding or bruxism is a common action when you are stressed and anxious. ➡️ Most people are unaware they are grinding their teeth, especially at night while they sleep.
➡️ Teeth grinding causes significant wear and tear on your teeth, resulting in chipped or loose teeth, tooth sensitivity, tongue indentations, and pain in your temples.

🦷 DECREASED IMMUNE RESPONSE

➡️ Stress compromises your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight infections. ➡️ High levels of the stress hormone cortisol triggers protein production in the gums that causes inflammation increasing your chances of developing gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis.

🦷 COLD SORE BLISTERS

➡️ Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are usually inactive unless triggered by stress.
➡️ While herpes simplex typically manifests as lesions on the lips or corners of the mouth, they can also appear on your gums which can make it challenging to brush and floss.

🦷 CANKER SORES

Canker sores are mouth ulcers that occur inside the mouth. They can be triggered by
- overzealous toothbrushing
- biting your cheek
- eating highly acidic foods
- smoking
- STRESS.

MAINTAINING YOUR ORAL HEALTH WHEN STRESSED IS IMPORTANT

✅The best way to fight the negative effects of stress on your oral and overall health is to remove the source.
✅ YOGA, MEDITATION, JOURNALING, EXERCISE, or COUNSELING may help reduce your tension.

Your dentist can also recommend specific treatment based on your symptoms. For example, they may schedule
➡️ More frequent dental cleanings,
➡️ Orthodontic treatment to correct teeth alignment or
➡️ Fit you a nightguard to combat bruxism.

It’s also important to follow a good oral hygiene routine. Continue to brush twice a day, floss and use mouthwash, and have your teeth and gums evaluated regularly by your dentist.

Contact us today to schedule an appointment and learn how we can help you halt the effects of stress on your oral health.

Morning headaches can occur for a variety of reasons. You may experience one once in a while after a poor night’s sleep or when experiencing stress, or you may experience them regularly.
Some conditions and factors that can cause early morning headaches:

1) INSOMNIA
2) DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY
3) SNORING OR SLEEP APNEA
4) STRAINED MUSCLES
5) HANGOVERS AND ALCOHOL
6)TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) DISORDERS
7) MEDICATIONS
8) CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISORDERS
9) OVERSLEEPING
10) GRINDING YOUR TEETH

One of the most common causes of morning headaches is clenching or grinding your teeth at night. Patients do not always know they are doing this because they are asleep.

Grinding or clenching your teeth is also known as BRUXISM . This can occur at night as a sleep disorder, which is referred to as Sleep Bruxism.
Some researchers believe that headaches linked to bruxism may actually stem from a disorder in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in your jaw.

A headache that occurs with bruxism is generally dull and can be felt near your temples.

Bruxism is also linked to other sleep conditions like sleep apnea, and it may cause damaged teeth and jaw pain. Treatment may involve:

1) A Mouthguard
2) Stress Reduction Techniques
3) Tongue And Jaw Exercises

20/11/2022

A tooth is a complex organ consisting of a soft connective tissue (dental pulp) encased in a chamber of mineralized hard tissues (enamel, cementum, and dentin). The outermost tissue in the crown region, is known as the ENAMEL.It is characterized by:

1) Highest mineralized tissue of the human body,
2) Provides the first hard barrier towards the outer environment, protecting the tooth from damage.

During tooth development, the AMELOBLASTS , which are responsible for the formation of enamel, undergo programmed cell death at the maturation stage and no longer exist in the mature enamel.

Therefore, once damaged, enamel cannot be biologically regenerated/repaired.

Whenever a tooth undergoes any damage, it's stem cells produce new dentin, in an attempt to repair the damage. However, this innate repair mechanism has its limits and can only manufacture small amounts of tissue while combating a cavity, injury, or infection. This is why, under normal circumstances, teeth cannot heal themselves.

Although futurists believe human teeth will one day be able to repair on their own with the use of stem cells, it is not currently possible for teeth to perform any sort of self-regeneration.
However, at the present time, those who have teeth with decay or damage need to rely on dentists for restoration.

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR ORAL HEALTH IS CLOSELY RELATED TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH ?

Certain medical conditions may have effects on your oral health that you may not even be aware of. And one such dreadful condition that can have a significant effect on your oral / overall health is DIABETES .

On this WORLD DIABETES DAY, let us have some insight on this disease and it's oral manifestations.

Diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels due to the body’s inability to produce or respond to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that would normally convert sugars from foods into usable energy. However, people with type 1 diabetes do not produce enough insulin to accomplish this, while people with type 2 diabetes are not able to respond to insulin properly.

As a result, high blood sugar can occur. High blood sugar can affect the body in various ways, but it can also affect your oral health in these ways:

🦷 INCREASES THE RISK OF GUM DISEASE

- Gum disease is extremely popular in people with diabetes, especially in individuals who do not know they have the disease and/or people who do not regulate their blood sugar carefully.
- The fact that sugars feed the bacteria responsible for causing gum disease, causes more bacteria to survive and reproduce.
- This process infects the gum tissue and causes it to become red, swollen, and tender.
- As gum disease progresses, it can eventually break down the connective tissues and bone around the teeth, which can lead to tooth loss.

🦷 CAUSES DRY MOUTH

- Dry mouth is when there is not enough saliva produced in the mouth, which causes the mouth to feel sticky and dry.
- Dry mouth is also often accompanied by bad breath, since the mouth develops more bacteria as a result of having less saliva.
- This also increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

🦷 INCREASES THE RISK Of ORAL THRUSH

- This is partially because diabetes decreases immune system efficiency and partially because of high blood sugar.
- Oral thrush is a fungus that feeds off sugars, so high blood sugar levels increase the likelihood of fungal growth on the tongue and cheeks.
- Oral thrush is also especially prevalent in individuals with dentures.

🦷 SLOWS DOWN HEALING

- Diabetes also slows down the healing process.
- High blood sugar prevents nutrients and oxygen from energizing the cells, decreases immune system function, and increases inflammation within the cells.
- For some, this can make it difficult to get ahead of oral infections.

🦷 IMPAIRS TASTE

- Diabetes can also impair your ability to taste properly, an undesirable thing.
- High blood sugar can either leave you with a permanent sweet taste in the mouth or it can make you unable to taste the sweetness of certain foods.
- Either the things you eat or drink won’t taste the same as they used to.
