At age 6, children begin erupting their first permanent molars. Sometimes, the overlying gum doesn't pull back completely, leaving a pocket where food and plaque collect. If this area gets repeatedly inflamed or infected (a condition called pericoronitis), an operculectomy becomes necessary to relieve the pain and allow the tooth to break through normally.
