The most common question asked by the patients who come for regular checkup and want to remove the debris and stain from teeth is that there will be thinning of enamel or weakening of the tooth if we get a professional scaling done.

The correct answer is NO.

There is a myth circulating around or maybe it is the imagination of the patient that the gentle rubbing action might cause a harmful effect but it is due to the ultrasonic action that the procedure is performed and not by rubbing on teeth.

Bristles are the working head of a toothbrush. When the bristles are firm and strong they perform the required function of cleaning in between tooth and also between tooth and gums. With time, the bristles gets frail and the required mechanical activity is inadequate. In such inadequacy even if the patient is brushing twice, the accumulation of debris and deterioration of oral health continues. When infants consume sweetened milk or are breastfed and then put off to sleep without cleaning their mouth, a layer forms over the surface of teeth.

This layer formed on the surface of teeth when stayed overnight in contact with the tooth surface increases the bacterial activity in the mouth leading to acid formation and eventual tooth decay.

This is called as Early Childhood caries

To prevent this from happening with your child, rinse the child's mouth before putting them off to sleep.

How to take care of your teeth?

The most asked question of everyone " is my teeth alright" , "what should I do to keep my teeth and gums healthy in the long run"

I would say that there are a few basic things we need to inculcate in our daily lives.

1) Brush twice daily using a soft brush and following a correct brushing technique.

2) Use a flosser once daily. Brushing doesn't clean the spaces in between teeth. Brushing and flossing together completes the oral cleaning process.

3) Change your toothbrush every three to six months. Toothbrush fray with time. Not changing the toothbrush leads to inefficient cleaning.

4) Visit a Dentist every Six months.
Any kind of teeth problem in nascent stage can easily be detected and restored in time.

Going by these simple protocols will keep your teeth and gums in good health forever.

Teeth Scaling and Polishing is a procedure where stains and debris deposited on teeth and between teeth and gums are removed with ultrasonics.

This is a procedure by which a person gets rid of bad breath, bleeding gums and unwanted stains on teeth.

It takes a single sitting of 45 minutes.

If you are visiting a dental clinic for the first time, I would tell you that it's completely non - invasive and painless.

Teeth scaling is not equivalent to teeth whitening. In Teeth Scaling, stains present on the surface of teeth by virtue of tea/coffee/Tobacco are easily removed.

However, in teeth whitening the stains permeating the surface of teeth are removed making it appear one or two shades lighter.
