Not every lost primary tooth should simply be left to nature.

Today’s pediatric dentistry cases involved two very different clinical situations—requiring two different space-maintaining strategies.

Your child broke a front tooth.
Don’t throw the broken piece away. 🦷

A small piece of a child’s front tooth may look insignificant—but sometimes, that fragment can be valuable during treatment.

When a child fractures a front tooth, our priorities are not simply to “fill the tooth.”

We assess:

• How deep the fracture is
• Whether the nerve/pulp is involved
• Whether the tooth is mobile or displaced
• Whether there is an injury to the surrounding tissues
• The child’s age and stage of dental development
• The best way to restore function, strength and natural appearance

In selected cases, the broken tooth fragment itself can be bonded back onto the tooth. This can provide an exceptionally natural-looking result because we are using the child’s own tooth structure.

What should parents do immediately?

1️⃣ Find the broken fragment.
Even if it looks very small, keep it.

2️⃣ Do not scrub or dry it aggressively.

3️⃣ Place it in milk or saline if available and bring it along with your child.

4️⃣ Get the tooth assessed as soon as possible.

And one important point:

A child may have little or no pain even when the injury needs careful evaluation.

A fractured front tooth deserves more than a quick cosmetic repair. It deserves a proper diagnosis, minimally invasive treatment where appropriate, and follow-up to monitor the tooth as the child grows.
