Cavities develop due to a combination of factors. First, naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars from the foods we consume. As these bacteria digest sugars, they produce acids as byproducts. These acids can erode the protective enamel on the teeth, creating weak spots. Over time, these weak spots can progress into cavities. Factors contributing to cavities include poor oral hygiene practices, a diet high in sugary or acidic foods, and the presence of certain bacteria that are particularly efficient at producing decay-causing acids.
