𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲?
Good oral/dental health translates to good health overall. Dental problems such as cavities or gum disease can impair your ability to eat and speak properly, cause pain and bad breath. And what many people may not realize, is that poor dental health can have a profound, negative effect on areas outside of the mouth, including your heart, diabetes, pregnancy, and chronic inflammation.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀?
The good news is that dental implants cannot get cavities or tooth decay like natural teeth can. However, failing to take care of them properly can still make them fail prematurely due to other health complications.

Normally, a tooth will develop cavities when plaque isn’t removed from the surface. Plaque is a sticky substance comprised of bacteria. It readily adheres to the surface of the teeth. Bacteria release acid byproducts, which eats away at the enamel on the top-most layer of the tooth. As the enamel on the surface of a tooth is worn away, tooth decay develops. The bacteria can invade beneath the surface of the tooth, causing worsening damage unless a dentist detects the cavity and treats it.

Dental implants are not made of enamel. The crown, which is the only visible part above the gum line, is made of porcelain. Because of this, it’s impossible for the acids to wear away the surface.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗹?
Tooth enamel is the hard, outer surface layer of your teeth that serves to protect against tooth decay. In fact, tooth enamel is considered the hardest mineral substance in your body, even stronger than bone. In spite of its strength, everyday acids that develop from certain foods and drinks, particularly those that are sweet or contain starch, can put your enamel at risk. Plaque bacteria produce acids that can weaken and destroy tooth enamel. Acids can attack and soften the tooth surface. And once your enamel is gone, it can be gone for good.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗹 𝗜𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱?
Tooth enamel loss is not always obvious, but some possible signs of damage to the tooth enamel include: Shape and Color: If your teeth look yellow or especially shiny, you may be experiencing tooth enamel loss. Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods may be an early sign of tooth enamel loss.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀?
Dental implants are titanium cylinders (screws) that are surgically placed into the jawbone where there are missing teeth below the gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. Your new tooth, a crown, will look and feel similar to your real teeth.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀?
For some people, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or even possible, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. In addition, ordinary bridges must be attached to teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. An advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement tooth/teeth in place.

To receive implants, you need to have:

Healthy gums
Adequate bone to support the implant (or be a candidate for bone grafting)
Excellent oral hygiene habits and regular dental visits to ensure the long-term success and health of the dental implants

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐩 𝐈𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬?
A crown is a cover or “cap” your dentist can put over a tooth. The crown restores the tooth to its normal shape, size, and function. A crown can make the tooth stronger or improve the way it looks. Reasons you may need a crown: • You have a cavity that is too large for a filling.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐩 𝐓𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡?
First, your dentist will apply anesthetic to numb the tooth getting the crown and the surrounding gum tissue. Then, they'll use a dental drill and an abrasive bur to remove the outer surface of the tooth on the top and all sides, creating enough room for the crown to be placed.
