Could this made in India 'smart' cancer drug make chemotherapy safer?

Indian scientists have developed RK-251 a prodrug designed to activate inside cancer cells Experts say the early findings are promising but human trials must establish safety and effectiveness

Cancer treatment has made major advances, but chemotherapy remains an important part of treatment for many cancers – a disease growing fast worldwide as well as in India. And the basic strength of the therapy is also one of its biggest limitations: many chemotherapy drugs attack rapidly dividing cells, but they cannot always distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells that also divide quickly.

Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra, senior oncologist with Art of Healing Cancer and CK Birla Hospital, said, “This drug primarily is a prodrug which gets activated in cancer cells whereas in normal cells it does not.”

In simple terms, a prodrug is a compound that is administered in a relatively inactive form and is converted into an active drug under particular conditions inside the body.

He describes this philosophy as “functional breast cancer surgery", an approach in which the breast, after cancer resection, should ideally look and feel as natural as possible.

“By functional breast cancer surgery I mean that the breast post cancer resection not only looks normal, it feels normal," explains Dr Malhotra.

Can a biopsy really make cancer spread? Oncologist explains why this decades-old myth is still putting lives at risk

A lump appears. A doctor recommends a biopsy. Instead of relief that an answer is finally within reach, many families are overcome by fear. One sentence often changes everything: "Don't get it touched. A biopsy will make the cancer spread."

New rules to bring stem cell, gene therapies under Central licensing net close regulatory gap

New licensing rules for stem cell and gene therapies in India aim to enhance safety but won't immediately reduce costs or increase access.

The Union Ministry of Health recently amended the Drugs Rules, 1945 to bring cell and stem cell products, gene therapies, and xenografts under the Centrally Licence Approving Authority (CLAA) framework, closing a long-standing regulatory gap in India’s oversight of advanced therapies.

The amendment brings such products under a uniform framework for the first time, addressing a regulatory grey zone that had let some clinics market dubious “stem cell” cures while charging patients large sums, Mandeep Singh Malhotra, director, surgical oncologist at C.K. Birla Hospital, Delhi, said.

However, the trend may have side effects. This half-truth is becoming dangerous for many patients. This fact is not entirely unscientific, but it is incomplete. In 1924, the German scientist Otto Warburg found that cancer cells consume more glucose than normal cells. This phenomenon is known as the Warburg Effect.

This finding has subsequently been validated in numerous studies. This is also the reason why cancer cells appear clearly in PET-CT scans. They absorb glucose-like substances more aggressively than normal cells. But this does not mean cancer can be “starved” by reducing sugar in food.
