The "V-Shaped" Jaw & The Airway Squeeze
Is Your Child’s Jaw a "U" or a "V"? 🧐🦴
In Part 1, we talked about how habits like thumb sucking and pacifier use act as "bone shapers." Today, let’s look at the physical change happening inside the mouth.
The Ideal Shape (The "U"):
A healthy jaw should be a wide, rounded "U." This shape provides:
✅ Plenty of room for permanent teeth.
✅ A wide, flat floor for the nasal cavity (easy breathing!).
The Habit Shape (The "V"):
Constant pressure from a thumb or pacifier pushes the palate (roof of the mouth) upward and inward, narrowing it into a "V" shape.
Why this matters for health:
When the jaw becomes a narrow "V," it narrows the nasal airway directly above it. This is why many children with these habits struggle to breathe through their nose and start mouth breathing.
The Good News: 🛡️
The jaw is very "plastic" at a young age. By identifying this "V-shape" early, we can often guide it back to a healthy "U" without the need for complex surgeries later!
Next in our series: We’ll explore the "Mouth-Breathing Trap" and why it’s the secret cause behind many chronic sore throats and tonsillitis. 🤒
