Hand Hygiene is the most important aspect of infection prevention and control. in these covid 19 times, hand washing hand rub and the scrub technique is really the need of the hour.
Continuing with the three plus series the second part of Infection control hand hygiene.
It is the most important aspect of infection control.
The term Hand hygiene is applied to:
1. Hand washing with soap (normal or antiseptic)
2. Hand rub with antiseptic/sanitizer
3. Surgical scrubbing technique
Why?? To protect yourself and others from infection transmission
When to wash your hands??
1. Before touching the patient
2. Before aseptic procedure
3. After body fluid exposure
4. After touching the patient
5. After touching the patient surroundings.
For visibly soiled WASH WASH WASH
If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. These sanitizers are the most efficacious agents for reducing the number of bacteria and viruses on hands and are recommended for routine decontamination of hands for all clinical indications (except when hands are visibly soiled)

HAND RUB WITH SANITIZER
Duration for 20-30 seconds
Apply a palmful of the product in a cupped hand, covering all surfaces
Step 1 Rub hands palm to palm
Step 2 Right palm over the left back of your hand with interlacing fingers
and vice versa
Step 3 Palm to palm with fingers interlaced
Step 4 Backs of fingers with opposite palm with fingers interlaced
Step 5 Rotational rubbing of the left thumb clasped in the right palm
Step 6 Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa
Step 7 Once dry your hands are safe
HAND WASING TECHNIQUES
When your hands are visibly soiled or dirty
Dutation 40-60 seconds
Step 1 Wet your hands with water
Apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces
Step 2 Rub hands palm to palm
Step 3 Right palm over the left back of your hand with interlacing fingers and vice versa
Step 4 Palm to palm with fingers interlaced
Step 5 Backs of fingers with opposite palm with fingers interlaced
Step 6 Rotaional rubbing of the left thumb clasped in the right palm
Step 7 Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa
Step 8 Rinse hands with water
Step 9 Dry your hand thoroughly with a single use towel
Use the towel to turn off the faucet
Your hands are now safe
Now the surgical scrubbing technique
It is done before entering the OR and after having donned the Ot scrubs, head cap and mouth mask
Nails should be clipped and no accessories should be there on fingers or wrists
Antibacterial soap is used
It has three cycles
In First cycle, wrists and elbows are scrubbed nicely then hands are scrubbed in the same way that we wash with soap and water.
In second cycle nails are cleaned
The third cycle is repetition of the first cycle
Now your hands are safe to wear sterile gloves and further ppe donning.
