DO YOU HAVE " BAD BREATH" ( HALITOSIS ) ?Most people are unaware of the fact that they have bad breath, or “halitosis” as dental professionals refer to it. Actually, one in four people have bad breath and approximately 50 percent of the adult population does have it.Causes of Bad Breath :Bad breath can be caused by external and internal factors.1) External factors: can be the types of foods that we eat such as spicy or odorous in nature like garlic and onion. People who use to***co and alcohol can also experience bad breath.2) Internal factors : include factors that can affect the body systemically. The tongue provides a place for bacteria to attach and grow. Most odor-causing bacteria produce compounds that cause bad breath called volatile sulfur compounds . These primary cause bad breath are hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. Most of these odor-causing bacteria reside in the back area of the tongue.3) Other causes include the following:a) Dental issues (poor oral hygiene, gingivitis and periodontaldisease)b) Dentures (plaque and food can develop on dentures)c) Dry mouth (lack of saliva flow)d) Mouth, nose and throat issues (sinus or throat infections and tonsillitis)e) Systemic diseases (diabetes, lung infections or abscesses, kidney/liver failure, gastrointestinal conditions)Please see your dental professional for a dental appointmentto determine why you are experiencing bad breath and continue to properly clean your mouth with an antibacterial fluoride toothpaste, use a mouthwash, floss daily and clean your tongue with a tongue scraper.

HOW LONG WILL AN ENDODONTICALLY TREATED TOOTH LAST?
Dear friends and colleagues,It's not uncommon for patients to inquire how long they can expect to keep their tooth if they spend thetime and money for endodontic therapy (ET) + a final restoration. This question was investigated in Sweden and the findings were published in the Jour. Endo. earlier this year by Boren, et al.The investigators conducted a randomized retrospective study for ET in a specialty clinic and looked back TEN YEARS! Here is what they found:-- a >91% survival rate for teeth with ET that were promptly crowned. Looking closer they found that only 7% of these teeth were lost due to endodontic pathosis. The remainder were extracted due to root fracture or recurrent caries.--only 76% survival if the teeth were not crowned.Statistically they found that age and timely placement of a crown were the most significant factors affecting long-term survival. Younger patients had fewer restorations, thus more tooth structure. So as clinicians, what should we take from this study? We have to make it crystal clear to our patients thatsimply having only the ET is like buying one shoe; they must have the tooth promptly restored (
