Paralysis is generally defined as the loss of muscle function in part of your body. It happens when there is an issue with the communication pathway between the brain/spinal cord and the muscles.
Type Affected Area Common Causes
Monoplegia One single limb (e.g., one arm or one leg). Stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), nerve damage (localized injury), or cerebral palsy.
Hemiplegia One vertical side of the body (e.g., the arm and leg on the same side—left or right). Often caused by stroke or brain injury on the opposite side of the brain.
Diplegia The same area on both sides of the body, most often affecting both legs more significantly than the arms, but can also refer to both arms or both sides of the face. Often associated with Cerebral Palsy (CP).
Paraplegia Both legs and sometimes the lower part of the torso and pelvic organs. Most commonly results from a spinal cord injury in the thoracic (mid-back) or lumbar (lower back) region.
Quadriplegia (also called Tetraplegia) All four limbs (both arms and both legs) and often the torso.
