Despite of all the accomplishments, it took 85 years since the discovery of “Roentgen rays” and the oral and maxillofacial radiology to be recognized as a speciality by American Dental Association (ADA). It was only in 1921 that dental professional started recognizing the importance of the speciality in acquisition and interpretation of the radiographs. On October 13, 1999 all the hard work had paid off when Oral and maxillofacial Radiology was recognized as the 9th speciality of dentistry by ADA. In India, Bombay University had initiated a two year Master’s Degree in the year 1959 which was changed to MDS course in Oral Medicine, diagnosis and radiology (OMDR) in the year 1970 after Government Dental College, Bangalore introduced the Master’s Course in the subject. As in India, the lack of awareness is the root cause of many diseases, OMDR specialists act as a saviour of many lives.

A competent Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist can do wonders in improving the diagnoses and treatment of the oral and maxillofacial diseases. The oral and maxillofacial radiologists defined their scope of practice by stating that they are “Knowledgeable about the pathological basis of disease and clinical and radiological correlation of disease”. Oral cancer is one of the most devastating diseases that has the potential to take away the lives.
But, this deadly can certainly be curbed if diagnosed and managed at the early stages.
PMDs or potentially malignant disorders are the early signs and symptoms of cancer seen in mouth that include leukoplakia, erythroplakia, oral lichen planus, OSMF to name a few.
I am privileged enough to gain an expertise in this area.

I am a hard core Indian and love and respect the rich cultural and historic values of India.
But, as an oral health care professional, I feel disheartened when I see the poor oral health conditions of people around me.We all are aware of the fact that our mouth is not just the gateway to palatable foodstuff but also aids in many of the critical physiologic functions like chewing food, breathing and speaking. Hence, we cannot afford to avoid this important part of human body. “MOUTH IS THE MIRROR OF ORAL HEALTH” and there are many health diseases which have their first symptom seen in mouth.
However, shortage in supply of services in the form of hospitals, diagnostic centers or well trained doctors, poor people or far off rural areas are being neglected.
Oral cancer is the 6th most common cancer worldwide and India contributing to about one-third of total cases with only second country with highest number of oral cancer cases. Yes, it is life threatening, but can it be prevented?? DEFINITELY, YES.
Recognition of the lesion at pre- cancer stage and its proper management follows up in line after awareness.
On this doctors' day, I request the authorities to come forward and help their fellow citizens to prevent this horrified health hazard.
Oral medicine specialists can act as a major pillar in improving the fabric of healthcare system by interconnecting the dental and medical specialities.
