Mao Zedong refused all dental care throughout his life, leading to severe tooth decay and chronic oral infections. By 1970, he had lost all his upper teeth, and at death in 1976, his remaining teeth were covered in a green film from plaque, pus from infected gums, and tea residue—his sole "hygiene" method of rinsing with tea and chewing leaves.

Mao embraced rural practices, dismissing toothbrushes as bourgeois when his physician urged them: "Does a tiger brush its teeth?" This neglect symbolized his rejection of Western norms, prioritizing ideology over health amid his chain-smoking and fatty diet. Poor hygiene worsened his emphysema, heart issues, and late-life conditions like ALS, leaving him bedridden. Even as leader, Mao's stubbornness turned personal decay into a grim footnote of his rule.
