Root canal treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp tissue from the inside of a tooth. Pulp tissue is the soft tissue inside a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. RCT can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

RCT steps in short:

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding gums.

Isolation: A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to isolate it from the rest of the mouth and prevent saliva and bacteria from contaminating the work area.

Access: A small hole is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.

Debridement: The infected or damaged pulp tissue is removed from the pulp chamber and root canals.

Shaping: The root canals are shaped to allow for proper filling.

Irrigation: The root canals are flushed with water or saline to remove any remaining debris.

Filling: The root canals are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

Sealing: The access hole is sealed with a filling material.
