Why should I go for a dental check -up every 6 months? (Part -1)

Our awareness of oral health is not as good as the awareness we have about general health. Most of us make it a point to visit our doctors for a general health check up every year. Why then do we neglect dental health? It is either the fear of being in a dental clinic, the fear of the cost of dental treatment or just the fact that it is after all the tooth and the mouth, what could go wrong?

This is where the understanding of oral health is necessary. Would any of you eat from a dirty plate? Even if it has a speck of dust on it you prefer to wash it before eating. How then would you justify having an infection in your mouth and eating and drinking and allowing that infection to thrive in your body?

- Oral health has been shown to affect several aspects of general health.
- It affects cardiac and respiratory health.
- Poor oral hygiene in pregnant women affects the birthweight of the baby and also can cause preterm babies.
- Diabetes is one of the biggest problems in India. If your oral health is poor bringing your blood sugar under control will be a humongous task.
