Part 6

Some patients find it difficult to open up—not because they don’t want to, but because they may not know how to express what they feel.

This is often seen in young children, men, and older adults. They may struggle to identify their emotions, verbalize their pain, or explain what is happening deep within them.

That is where expressive arts therapy can help. 🎨

A person doesn’t need to be an artist. Even a scribble, stroke, shape, or dot may become a starting point for expression. The way they draw, choose colours, use space, and place elements on the paper can offer clues about emotions that may be difficult to communicate through words.

Expressive art provides a safe, non-verbal space to explore feelings, emotional pain, and experiences held within the subconscious mind.

Sometimes, healing doesn’t begin with a conversation.

Sometimes, it begins with a single dot.

Expressive arts therapy should be facilitated and interpreted by a qualified professional. A drawing alone should not be used to diagnose a person.

Part 2
Some everyday habits can quietly put extra strain on your jaw muscles and TMJ. 🦷

Habits such as gum chewing, nail biting, and pen chewing keep the jaw muscles working more than necessary. Over time, this may contribute to tightness, discomfort, or jaw pain.

Even the way you yawn matters. Opening your mouth too wide or holding it open for too long can overstretch the jaw and increase discomfort.

And don’t forget hydration. Not drinking enough water may contribute to dehydration and muscle cramps, including in the jaw muscles.

Small changes can help:

✅ Reduce gum chewing
✅ Avoid nail and pen biting
✅ Don’t open your mouth excessively while yawning
✅ Stay well hydrated
✅ Pay attention to persistent jaw pain or tightness

If these habits are associated with jaw pain, TMJ discomfort, clenching, headaches, or migraine symptoms, it is worth getting them properly evaluated.

Your daily habits may be affecting your jaw more than you realise.

Part 1
Small daily habits can make a big difference to your jaw health and TMJ comfort. 🦷✨

If you experience jaw tightness, clenching, grinding, or TMJ discomfort, simple changes may help reduce unnecessary strain on the jaw muscles.

✅ Keep your teeth relaxed while sleeping
✅ Choose soft foods when your jaw feels sensitive
✅ Cut food into smaller pieces to reduce chewing effort
✅ Maintain good head and neck posture
✅ Use a night guard when recommended for clenching or grinding
✅ Try sleeping on your back with a supportive pillow
✅ Manage stress with deep breathing and meditation

Your jaw muscles also need time to relax and recover.

If jaw pain, clicking, stiffness, headaches, or clenching continue, get a proper evaluation to understand the underlying cause and receive the right treatment.

Take care of your jaw before small habits become daily pain.

When the Ringing Isn’t Coming From the Ear

Tinnitus is often described as ringing, buzzing or humming in the ears. But in some cases, the ear may only be where the sound is perceived — not where the trigger begins.

If the ringing changes with neck movement, posture or long hours of screen time, the upper neck and surrounding muscles may need to be evaluated.

Some useful clues can include:

🔹 Ringing that feels better in the morning
🔹 Symptoms worsening after prolonged screen time
🔹 Little or no change with chewing
🔹 Ringing becoming louder when turning the neck
🔹 Neck stiffness, tension or discomfort occurring along with tinnitus

When neck movement clearly influences tinnitus, cervicogenic or somatic tinnitus may be considered as part of the evaluation.

Long hours at a desk, poor posture, reduced neck mobility and persistent muscular tension can place additional strain on the cervical region. In appropriate cases, management may focus on:

✅ Improving neck mobility
✅ Correcting posture
✅ Addressing muscle tension
✅ Cervical rehabilitation
✅ Identifying and managing the actual trigger

The goal is not simply to silence the symptom temporarily. It is to understand why the ringing is changing and identify the structures that may be contributing to it.

💡 Treat the source, not just the sound.

Persistent or new tinnitus should always be properly evaluated to rule out ear-related and other medical causes before assuming it is coming from the neck.

🧠 Migraine Triggers Ranked by a Doctor

Migraine attacks are not always random. For many people, certain everyday habits, environmental changes, or lifestyle factors can trigger an episode.

Here’s how some common migraine triggers rank:

🥇 Stress – #1
One of the most important and common migraine triggers.

😴 Sleep Disturbance – #2
Irregular sleep, late nights, too little sleep, or even excessive sleep may trigger migraines.

🌸 Hormonal Changes – #3
Especially in women, hormonal fluctuations around periods or after delivery may play a role.

🍽️ Skipping Meals / Fasting – #4
Missing breakfast or going for long periods without food can be a major trigger for some people.

💧 Dehydration – #5
Not drinking enough water throughout the day may increase the chance of a migraine attack.

☕ Certain Foods & Drinks – 6
Coffee, chocolate, alcohol, lemon, or even certain foods may act as triggers depending on the individual.

🌦️ Weather & Temperature Changes – 7
Sudden shifts from heat to an air-conditioned environment, or vice versa, can sometimes trigger migraine symptoms.

💡 Bright Lights & Strong Smells – 8
Perfume, burning smells, flashing lights, or vehicle headlights during night travel may trigger migraines in sensitive individuals.

⚠️ Migraine triggers can vary greatly from person to person. Identifying your own pattern can help you understand and manage your attacks better.

What can trigger TMJ problems?

TMJ problems may develop or worsen due to several everyday habits and physical factors.

Stress is one of the most important triggers because it can increase jaw-muscle tension and lead to clenching or grinding.

A previous jaw injury or trauma may also affect the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, increasing the risk of pain, stiffness, or restricted movement.

Other contributing factors include:

• Poor posture
• Jaw overuse
• Opening the mouth too wide
• Singing or talking for long periods
• Keeping the mouth open during lengthy dental procedures
• Lack of sleep
• Chewing gum for extended periods

Although hard or chewy foods may not be a major primary cause, they can worsen pain and discomfort in people who already have a TMJ problem.

TMJ symptoms can have different causes for different people. Identifying your personal triggers is an important part of receiving the right treatment.

Experiencing jaw pain, clicking, stiffness, headaches, or difficulty opening your mouth? Consult a qualified orofacial pain specialist for proper evaluation.

Can jaw tension affect more than just your teeth?

Persistent jaw clenching may place additional strain on the muscles around the jaw, neck and base of the skull. As the body responds to this tension, changes may also appear in head position, posture and overall movement.

When the head begins to move forward, the centre of gravity changes. The neck and upper back may need to work harder to support the head, while the spine and pelvis may gradually compensate.

This may contribute to symptoms such as:

• Jaw tightness or discomfort
• Neck and shoulder tension
• Headaches or pain near the base of the skull
• Upper-back stiffness
• Lower-back pressure
• Changes in posture or balance
• Walking that feels tighter, shorter or less smooth

The jaw is not completely separate from the rest of the body. Muscles, joints, posture and the nervous system work together as one connected system.

However, jaw tension is not always the cause of neck, back, pelvic or walking problems. A detailed clinical evaluation is necessary to understand the actual source of your symptoms.

Do not ignore recurring jaw tension, frequent clenching, headaches or persistent neck discomfort.
