🔴THUMB SUCKING HABIT

-Placement of thumb or one or more fingers in various depths into the mouth.

-Recent studies have shown that thumb sucking may be practiced even during intrauterine life.

-It is the first coordinated muscular activity of infant which meets both psychological and nutritive needs during feeding, deprivation of which leads to restless and irritability and this may motivate the infant to suck to thumb or finger for additional gratification

❓When do children stop thumb sucking

✅The presence of thumb sucking habit is considered quite normal till the age of 3.5- 4 yrs.
❎If the habit persists after the permanent teeth begin to erupt, orthodontic treatment may be necessary to overcome the resulting tooth displacement.
🔴Effects of thumbsucking depends on
- Duration
- Frequency
- intensity
➖The parent should be questioned on the frequency and duration of the habit

🔴The child's emotional status should be assessed by enquiring into such things as
🔻Feeding habits
🔻parental care of the child
🔻whether the parents are working

❓How can we stop Thumb sucking

🟢psychological approach

- it is usually said that children lacking parental care, love and affection resort to this habit
- Thus parents should be counseled to provide the child with adequate love and affection
- Parents should also be advised to divert the child's attention to other things such as play and toys.

During the treatment adequate emotional support and concern should be provided to the child by the parents.
Constant reassurance and encouragement should be provided to the child to gain his confidence

🟢Reminder therapy

1- intraoral approaches
Removable habit breakers
Fixed habit breakers
2-extraoral approaches
Use of bitter-tasting or foul-smelling preparation placed on the thumb that is sucked can make the habit distasteful.
Eg:- quinine,asafoetida, cayenne pepper.

✅Most children will stop the habit when then are ready, However, this is no reason to delay the start of treatment for other aspects of the malocclusion.

🍼 Bottle Feeding

🍼👶Bottle feeding a newborn is very common. Feeding milk to your child from a bottle is called bottle feeding. Most children develop an attraction to the bottle since it is an extension and remembrance of their mother’s breast milk.
Recommended time to introduce the cup to the baby is from 6 months of age.The child may find it difficult to handle the cup. However, by the end of the first year you must try and stop the usage of the bottle as much as possible. Sippy bottles are best alternatives to try when the baby is around 10-12 months. After the age of 1 the child will have hand eye coordination and can hold the cup steadily.

❓Problems of bottle-feeding
- Tooth decay
-Obesity
-Anemia
-Ear infection
🚫How to stop bottle feeding
- Gradual weaning
Do not stop the bottle feeding at once, but gradually, so that child gets used to it
- Attraction towards the cup
Try to use attractive cups
eg:- Cartoon characters, painted
colorful cups
- Encourage the child
Praise the effort the child takes while drinking from the cup.
Encourage the child and show your appreciation
- Understand the child's need
Parents will have to stop using the bottle as a comforter for child's irritation & take extra effort in addressing the real reason of discomfort and spending more time playing or interacting with the child.
