That old filling might be doing more than just holding your tooth together.
A patient recently came in with pain from a filling that had lasted 15 years. On examination, we found small cracks in it — and heavy calcification in the tooth underneath, which made the root canal more complex. We treated it and saved the tooth.
Old fillings don’t always announce a problem with pain. A routine check-up can catch cracks, leakage, decay underneath, or early signs of weakening — before any of it turns into a root canal.
Replacing a filling early is often what prevents the bigger problem later.
