If you think that the efficacy of your toothbrush is the same even with frayed bristles, you have a misconception.

Change your toothbrush every 3 months. Once the bristles start to fray, the toothbrush doesn't solve it's intended purpose. Using a tooth brush with frayed bristles leads to microscopic damage on your teeth, discoloration, sensitivity and gum recession.

You need to change your toothbrush more often than you think.

When was the last time you changed your toothbrush? Tell us in the comments below!

Bruxism is the grinding and clenching of teeth, and usually occurs subconsciously while you are sleeping at night!

Causes of bruxism include anxiety, stress, sleep apnoea etc.

Bruxism wears away the enamel (the outer surface of teeth) creating the appearance of shortened teeth, this is known as a type of wear called 'dental attrition'. Overtime, attrition can expose the underlying dentine, which can lead to tooth sensitivity!

Signs and symptoms of bruxism include:
-Tightness, pain or soreness from jaw muscles after waking up -Headaches after waking up
-Wearing away of enamel -Teeth flattening out
-Chipped or cracked teeth -Teeth sensitivity

What is plaque and calculus?

These are the deposits on teeth that will develop no matter how much you brush. They can only be effectively removed by a dentist in a process called scaling and polishing. However, if not cleaned well they may develop faster than they have never before but nevertheless scaling and polishing should be done for their removal.

What is scaling and polishing?

Dental scaling is a procedure which removes infected deposits like plaque, calculus and stains from the tooth surfaces. If not removed it might cause infection of gums and ultimately leading to pyorrhea and tooth loss. Scaling is safe and routine procedure if done by a qualifed dentist. It is recommend to visit the dentist to do this session once every six months to maintain dental health and vibrancy

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Veneers are routinely used to fix:
-Teeth that are discolored because of:
-root canal treatment
-stains from tetracycline or other drugs
-excessive fluoride
-large resin fillings
-other causes
-Teeth that are worn down
-Teeth that are chipped or broken
-Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)
-Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)

A dental implant process involves the placement of prosthetic tooth roots. These implants fuse with your jawbone, allowing your dentist or oral surgeon to put crowns, which are replacement teeth. If you have one or more lost permanent teeth, dental implants may be a possibility. They are designed to appear, feel, and operate similarly to your real teeth.
Implants are a treatment option made from titanium, the most compatible material the body can have and is used in all fields of medicine. The success of the implant depends on the amount of bone, the quality of the implant and the accuracy of the surgical stage.

No matter what age you are, the reasons for tooth decay are the same. Tooth decay occurs when you have plaque with bacteria that feeds on the sugar you’re adding to your diet, which can cause cavities. Cavities are due to the bacteria metabolizing sugar and turning it into acid dissolving your tooth structure.

Eating foods that are bad for your teeth can contribute to plaque and tooth decay. The image shows which foods you should stay away from, or at least limit, to keep your teeth as healthy as possible.

The bottom line is that sugar and acid can be your teeth’s worst enemy. Your mouth will be happier if you consume food that provides vitamins and minerals, neutralizes acids, stimulates saliva and repairs tooth enamel. Good nutrition can help build strong gums and teeth. Avoid foods that cause plaque on teeth. Instead, munch on more mouth-friendly snacks like nuts, cheeses, non-acidic fruits and vegetables.

Dental crowns are caps placed on top of damaged teeth. Crowns are used to protect, cover and restore the shape of your teeth when fillings don’t solve the problem. Dental crowns can be made out of metals, porcelain, resin and ceramics. They typically don’t require special care over time other than regular good oral hygiene.

You may need a dental crown for several reasons, including:

-Protecting a weak tooth (possibly from decay) from breaking or to keep the weak tooth together if parts of it are cracked.

-Restoring a broken tooth or a severely worn down tooth.

-Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling and not much tooth remaining.

-Holding a dental bridge in place.

-Covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

-Covering a dental implant.

-Covering a tooth that’s been treated with a root canal.

The first step to getting your teeth aligned is meeting with your dentist. They will perform an oral exam and take a series of X-rays and photos of your head and mouth. They will also take an impression of your teeth to plan your treatment.

Traditional braces require orthodontic adjustment every four to six weeks. Patients typically wear braces for one to three years, although your dentist/orthodontist will have a better idea of your time frame after developing your treatment plan.

If you choose aligners, your dentist/orthodontist will give you several sets. Each set should be worn for one to two weeks. Aligners should be worn for 22 hours a day and are taken out of the mouth for eating, brushing and flossing. As with braces, patients will need to wear a retainer after clear aligners.
