Removal of natal teeth in 6 day old female infant

What is natal teeth ?
Teeth that are already present at birth are called as natal teeth.

Natal teeth are uncommon and most often develop on lower gum. They are not well formed having little or no root structure. They are lossely attached to gum and often wobbly.

When it is needed to remove natal teeth ?
- possible risk of your child inhaling the tooth into his/her airway and lungs if the tooth becomes disloged during nursing due to its great mobility
- ulceration on the undersurface of the tongue due to constant irritation
- difficulty in feeding or refusal to feed due to pain
- ulceration and ni**le pain to the mother resulting in interference with breast feeding

Note : confirm vit k status before removal as it is an essential factor which helps the blood to clot and prevents bleeding. Newborns have very little vitamin K stored in their bodies.

Do you check your child's mouth for teeth?

Early signs of tooth decay can be seen in the mouth. The upper front teeth are usually the first teeth to be affected. These teeth can be easily checked by retracting the lip. If detected at early stage stopping or reversing the tooth decay process is possible.

By simply using 'Lift the lip' method, you can get to know your child's teeth, as soon as they appear and in healthy condition. Lift the lip regularly to look for any changes in the appearance of the teeth.

Do you know the correct amount of toothpaste for children?

For children under age 3 - smear or rice size amount of fluoridated toothpaste which is safe amount without spitting.

For children between 3 to 6 years of age - pea size amount of fluoridated toothpaste as they have developed spitting as well as rinsing.

Remember your child needs help brushing and flossing until they are 6-7 years of age. They do not have completely developed dexterity so make sure you are checking after each brush.
